limu.eco GmbH from Zurich transforms aquatic plants into high-performance additives
What is currently collected in large quantities as waste from lakes and rivers during waterway maintenance and subsequently disposed of is used by limu.eco to create high-quality additives for sustainable material solutions.
The first additive can be added to biodegradable plastics to make them significantly more efficient in their degradation process.

Pioneer in funding
The Swiss Climate Foundation decided to provide funding, because the company is working on using aquatic plants as a raw material for a circular economy.

The company was founded in 2024 by Timo Geuggis and is headquartered in Mettmenstetten in the canton of Zurich (Switzerland). The company sees itself as a pioneer of a new, circular-economy-oriented biorefinery approach.
The goal is to sensibly process previously unused biomass from waterway maintenance and develop sustainable material solutions from it.
What makes limu.eco unique?
Due to rising water temperatures, the amount of aquatic plants in lakes and rivers is increasing. This biomass must be removed regularly and is currently mostly disposed of. limu.eco sees this as a local raw material with great potential.
The company processes the biomass using its own methods to create functional additives for sustainable material solutions. limu.eco is not a plastics manufacturer or anything of the sort — quite the opposite.
Where does limu.eco stand today?
limu.eco is currently working on further developing its pilot plant and industrializing the process.
With support from the Swiss Climate Foundation, a key manufacturing step — namely the drying process – can be substantially optimized. The goal is to achieve a significant improvement in energy efficiency and process management.
The company is already able to convert aquatic biomass from waterway maintenance into storable materials. Together with partners from research, industry, and government agencies, the value chain is now to be expanded step by step.
